Hi parents,
Today was a good day all around - the students were a bit over-excited at times, but we were doing some exciting magnet activities, so I think that's understandable.
In the morning, the students did a quick activity where they had to use the shapes square, circle, rectangle, and triangle to represent their house, car, pet, and self. The catch was, they could only use each shape once. So they had to get pretty creative with this one, drawing circular cars, rectangular pets, and of course, triangular people.
We watched a Bill Nye episode on Magnetism, because there is no better way to introduce a new Science topic than with Bill. The kids loved the video and thought it was hilarious, but it also really got them thinking about magnets. We had an excellent discussion afterward, and the students asked some very thoughtful questions, including: "How big of a magnet would you need to make an iron airplane fall out of the sky?"
In the afternoon, the students had some time to experiment with magnets, and to test a variety of materials to see if they are magnetic. The students made predictions first and recorded their findings like actual scientists.
Remember that tomorrow is our Spelling Quiz!
Have a nice night,
Zac
