Thursday

Hello families,
We had a pretty good day today all around!
In the morning, I had planned what I thought would be a very challenging math writing task, in which the students had to create their own addition-based word problems. A word problem is usually about three sentences long, which is already a lot for many Grade 1 students to write, and on top of that, they had to be able to create and solve an addition problem. The class really rose to the challenge on this one, however, and ended up finishing it in about half of the time I had expected it to take!
This ended up being a bit of a problem, because they did not use their free choice time very well, and it got quite loud. Maybe that's my fault for not planning a challenging enough task?
We watched a video that taught the class about the earth's orbit, and how it affects night and day, as well as the changing seasons. The students had lots of thoughtful questions about earth, the sun, and space.
In the afternoon, the class did an amazing job with Buddy Reading. We're taking the time to go over each Daily 5 station individually to ensure everyone still remembers the expectations. After that, we read a book called "Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter", and the students drew pictures to illustrate some of the seasonal changes that occur between Autumn and Winter.
Tomorrow News:
There is a lot happening tomorrow! First of all, we are having our Lockdown Party, which takes the form of another Pajama Day. Students are also welcome to bring one stuffy / toy. No electronics please, and nothing too gigantic! We are still going to be doing a lot of work tomorrow so if anything becomes too distracting, I might have to take it for the day.
Tomorrow is also our Class Dojo Store! Students will have the opportunity to spend their Dojo Points on a variety of fun school supplies and things of that nature. They will have to use subtraction to independently figure out how many points they will be spending, and how many points they will have left over.
Finally, it is also our Spelling Quiz tomorrow. :)
Have a great night!
Zac
