Hi parents,
Today was a good day for our class, even though the class was exceptionally chatty...
In the morning, we had an extra work period instead of Explore and Play. I had a chance to work on subtraction with lots of different students one-on-one, and I showed them some ways to solve subtraction problems using the materials in the classroom. The picture strategy that I wrote about on the Blog yesterday is great, but for some students, having the option to use concrete materials to help them count can be a game changer. Luckily in our Montessori classroom, we have plenty of beads, gems, and figurines to help students make sense of these foundational math skills. :)
Thank you to everyone who did the secret "Blog Homework" last night! I will still be accepting 'homework' tomorrow, and on Friday, so if you missed it last night, don't worry!
We had a discussion this morning about healthy / unhealthy foods, favourite treats, and favourite restaurants. The students wrote brief responses to the prompt, "I like to eat..."
In the afternoon, we had Daily 5 and Music. At the end of the day, we watched a Wild Kratts episode about Showshoe Hares. We talked a bit about 'Adaptations', and how basically it is a fancy word for what the Wild Kratts call "Creature Powers". I heard the Wild Kratts are coming to Calgary tomorrow night! I wish I had bought tickets!
Have a great night,
Zac
