Tuesday, February 1

 Hi parents,

We had a pretty good day today. In the morning, we had an awesome class discussion about Lunar New Year / Chinese New Year. We watched a couple of Youtube videos that explained the history behind it, but it was extra cool to get to hear from students in class who celebrate it themselves. Students asked thoughtful questions and made connections between Chinese New Year and other holidays that their families celebrated.

It's finally time for our class to start learning about editing and revision. We've discussed ways to 'improve' work in the past, such as fixing spelling errors and increasing neatness, but this week we're getting serious. We're learning about the "COPS" acronym, which stands for Capitals, Organization, Punctuation, and Spelling. Each day, we'll do a different editing activity related to one of the letters.

Today, the students wrote sentences, intentionally using terribly improper capitalization, and then switched with a partner to edit each other's work. We talked about how a great way to reduce the burden of editing is by staying focused when writing, and trying to 'get it right' the first time. When it comes to correct capitalization, this is actually pretty easy to do.

We went over this week's spelling words, did some math work, and ended the day with Music.

In Class "Field Trip" - Feb. 9

Forms were sent home today regarding an upcoming in-class field trip. Students will have an opportunity to create Inuit-inspired artwork with a professional artist! And thanks to School Council, the entire 'trip' has been paid. That being said, the Acknowledgement of Risk forms still need to be signed and returned in order for students to participate (sandpaper injuries are no laughing matter).

Please return your child's form, signed, by Friday, Feb. 4.

Have a nice night!

Zac
