Wednesday, September 1 (First Day of School)

 Hi parents,

We had a fantastic first day of school today. Honestly I think it was probably the best 'first day' I've ever had, and I'm sure it will be tough for the students to top it in later grades. I really enjoyed getting to reconnect with former students, and having the opportunity to meet and get to know those who are new to my class. The students were kind and respectful to me and their peers and there didn't seem to be any disagreements or conflicts whatsoever. We also did a lot of "work", especially for the first day, and I was happy to see everyone trying their best and staying focused.

Here's a breakdown of today:

We started with a quick Morning Math task, in which the class had to draw four animals, and solve one of three addition problems. I like to start each day with Morning Math because it's a great way for students to build independence when solving math problems, and it ensures everyone gets to practice math every day. I always provide three different difficulty levels so students can choose problems that are at a good level for them.

We had some Explore and Play time, which gave the students a chance to explore their new classroom and see where everything is located. We spent some time reviewing the importance of hand washing, giving each other space, and other classroom expectations. These are pretty similar to last year and the students were already pretty familiar with them.

We played "Battle of the Ten Towers" in Gym, which is kind of a bowling / dodgeball hybrid.

In the afternoon, the students created and decorated labels for their cubbies, and we talked about Mindfulness. We discussed the three main classroom rules too - Be Kind, Be Safe, Try Your Best.

After Recess, we did a drawing activity and talked about how different eyebrow / mouth combinations can capture different emotions. For example,    >:(   shows a mad face, but   >:)   is a a devious, scheming face. Although the students drawings were not sideways.

I forgot mention this in my earlier message, but please send your students with 'indoor shoes' soon if possible!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at zalink@cbe.ab.ca!

The first few days are a bit hectic but I will try to respond as soon as I can.

Have a nice night,

Zac
