 Hi parents,

We had yet another awesome day today. Our spelling quiz was a huge success - not only did more students challenge themselves to try all three lists than ever, but we also got through all the words efficiently because everyone listened politely and there were almost no call-outs. I am not sure if that's just a Grade 2/3 thing, or I have an exceptional class (which is true regardless), but it's definitely a good thing.

We watched an episode of "Molly of Denali" about indigenous names (because the show is American, they used the term 'Native Names', but we discussed that in Canada we use different terms). The students thought it was really interesting how many of the indigenous names had special meanings that reflected the qualities of each person. The students shared stories about the significance of their own names. Some students were named after other people, some names had meanings in other languages, and other students weren't sure how they got their names, but they intend to find out!

The class wrote acrostic poems using their names, and words that described them.

We had a lesson about 'base ten blocks', and how to represent numbers using them. The students completed a worksheet that tested their knowledge of thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.

I think we're off to a great start with math and I'm excited to start delving into some more complex topics!

Stay tuned for next week's spelling words, and have a nice weekend!

Zac
