Hi parents,
Today we did some very challenging math word problems, in which the students had to create 'fair teams'. The process of solving these problems is actually a lot like the process students have been using to solve our 'fill in the blanks' problems! I thought I would give some "Blog Homework" today, because the students definitely were struggling with these problems in class! As always, this homework is worth 2 dojo points.
1. There are 9 kids on the red team, and 11 kids on the blue team. How many kids need to switch teams so that both teams can have the same number of players?
2. There are 8 kids on the red team, and 14 kids on the blue team. How many kids need to switch teams so that both teams have the same number of players?
3. There are 4 kids on the red team, 6 kids on the blue team, and 8 kids on the green team. How could you make each team have the same number of players?
We spent a lot of time talking about behaviour, and respectful listening today. I can tell that these talks have had a big impact on many students, because so many kids have been doing an absolutely fantastic job lately! Unfortunately, unless everyone is on the same page when it comes to behaviour, the classroom can quickly become a loud and stressful place. I think it would be awesome if the students started developing some leadership strategies, to politely redirect their peers when they may be off task.
In the afternoon, we had a class discussion about the 'nicest gifts we've ever given'. I know that kids love to talk about all the cool things they've gotten for their birthdays, or for Christmas, but it was really interesting to hear their thoughts about the gifts they've given to others! They also wrote about these ideas in their journals.
Remember that tomorrow is our spelling quiz! And if you have any extra socks, we are still looking for lots!
Have a nice night,
Zac
