Thursday, December 1

 Hi parents,

We had a good day today all around, although it did get a little crazy in the afternoon. The students miss going outside.

In the morning, Mr. Ripka taught a lesson on the literary device 'hyperbole', which is basically a fancy word for exaggeration. The students revised prewritten sentences to make them more exaggerated and ridiculous.

In math, we did a pretty tricky task called "Coffee Shop Employee Simulator". Students were given real-world scenarios in which they would have to give change after receiving cash. This was the advanced version:

Coffee Shop Employee Simulator              ADVANCED

Product

Price

Bagel

$2.45

Coffee

$1.95

Green Tea

$0.95

Fresh Scone

$3.15

Jumbo Muffin

$6.75

1. Someone buys a Bagel and a Green Tea. They give you $5.00.

How much change do you give them?

2. Someone buys a Fresh Scone and a Coffee. They give you $20.00.

How much change do you give them?

3. Someone buys a Bagel, a Coffee,  and a Jumbo Muffin. They give you $20.00.

How much change do you give them?

4. Someone buys three bagels and a Green Tea. They give you $50.00.

How much change do you give them?

The basic version involved the same prices, but the customers only bought one item each, so the math was bit easier.

It's been great to see how easily the students are picking up these money problems after spending so long learning non-decimal subtraction!

In the afternoon we had Music, Gym, and Daily LA.

Tomorrow is "Fun Friday", and also our Spelling Quiz. It is not a PJ day or anything like that, but the work we do will be exceptionally fun. Except for the spelling quiz. It will be the same as usual.

Have a nice night,

Zac
