We had an awesome week! It was incredibly busy. The next two weeks are going to be a breeze by comparison

Sharing Assembly - Big Success!

We spent the first of the week practicing for our sharing assembly, which was on Thursday. It went super well. The students did a great job singing "Count on Me", and the shadow puppet show turned out just great.

You can watch the video here, and put your child on the spot by asking them to sing along!

Sports Day - "Just Like The Old Days!"

It truly was a classic sports day. Perfect weather, plenty of fun stations, and lots of smiling faces. The kids loved being able to explore the stations on their own or with friends from other classes. We ended the day with a Teachers vs. Grade 6 Kickball Game. Teachers proved that growing up in the 80s and 90s truly does build excellent kickball skills. But the Grade 6s played really well too!

French Party - "Postponed AGAIN"

This time it was postponed due to a sever baguette and croissant shortage at superstore. They also didn't have any Quiche. And, the assembly day was just so busy, there wouldn't have been time to do it justice. So the new date is Monday, June 19. 

90's Thursday "The Raddest Spirit Day of the Year"

On Thursday, June 22, we will have a 90's themed spirit day. Parents, please help your children dress appropriately for this day. We will also be doing some 90's pop culture trivia (name the actor, etc.) so maybe help your child brush up on those skills as well.

Spelling Quiz - "Nope"

Our week was one of the busiest in LBS history. There was virtually no time to practice for spelling in class, and certainly no time to have a quiz today, so we will be having a quiz on the same words next Friday instead.

Science - "Loose Parts Wanted!"

We are about to start a very fun Science unit: "Wheels and Levers". Students will eventually be building simple machines that would help people in historic Alberta (think "What would help Sam and his family on their farm in 'Ticket to Curlew'). If you have cardboard, string, tape, or building materials at home that you'd like to donate to this cause, please send them to school with your child next week! 

Math - "Still Graphing"

We've been doing more graphing but are just about done now.

The theme this week is comparison words. We'll do some work in class around the process of adding -er, -ier, and -est to compare various qualities, and hopefully by the end of the week, students will be able to apply this understanding to spell words well beyond the ones they've studied.

 Hi parents,

Here's what's been happening in Room 4 over the past week, as well as some upcoming events.

Math - Line Graphs & Data Analysis

We've been looking at graphs all right. The students have enjoyed analyzing data presented by various line graphs, and proposing possible reasons for changes. We looked at a graph of screen time over the course of a week, a graph of math problems answered per day, and a graph of fancy shirts owned each year. We talked about how line graphs can tell stories, in a way, or just show patterns, but how a graph alone cannot tell us why things happen the way they do. The students are having trouble with making their own line graphs. We'll keep working at that next week.

Literacy - Ticket to Curlew

We're finished Ticket To Curlew! It was a nice story. Not a lot happened, but it was light, and painted a vivid picture of what life was like 100 years ago in small town Alberta. The students did a few Curlew-based writing prompts, and as always, we had plenty of class discussions.

Wisdom Wall- Stoicism

We've been learning about stoicism as part of our inquiry around the question: "how does wisdom help up to live well?" Stoicism is a great philosophy for Montessori students especially, as it emphasizes the importance of always doing your best, and finding happiness in knowing that you gave it your all, regardless of the effects. It talks a lot about identifying what you can and cannot control in your life, and learning to accept things that you can't while fully investing yourself in what you can.

Science - Light and Shadows & Hearing and Sound (Assembly June 15)

We're doing a lot of work with shadows. Our class has been creating 'shadow puppets', and we're going to be putting on a shadow puppet performance to accompany a performance of 'Count on Me' by Bruno Mars. Please encourage your child to practice the song at home! 

The assembly will be at 9:30am, and you are all welcome to come!

We also made a giant Sundial with the basketball hoop.

French Party - June 15

The French Party will be next Thursday, after our assembly.

Room 4 Talent Show - Monday, June 26

We will be continuing the tradition of ending our year with a Talent Show. All talents are welcome, as long as they can be performed in 1 - 5 minutes. Please feel free to submit talent videos as well. Participation is optional. Please let me know if there's any equipment your child may need for their talent - we have access to a piano and various sporting equipment!

We have officially made it through one of the busiest weeks of the year. Next week may take the cake for all-time busiest, we'll see. We have an organizational day tomorrow, and I'll be updating the blog then, as well as posting new spelling words.

French Party Postponed & Sports Day Info

Hi parents,

I was looking at our schedule for tomorrow, we've got the Volunteer Tea, Music, Rugby, and a bunch of practice for our assembly next week, and it occurred to me that we would only have 30 minutes at most for our French party, which just didn't seem like enough time. So, we've decided to move it to next Thursday, June 15th instead. Our assembly will be in the morning, and then in the afternoon, we'll get to celebrate. French-ly.

SPORTS DAY - JUNE 16 (DAY AFTER FRENCH PARTY)

We are so excited to be able to host a Lake Bonavista School Sports Day in 2023! Sports Day will be taking place on Friday, June 16^th from 9:00am – 11:50am, the end of day dismissal time will stay the same (12:15pm). On this day, students will begin in the gymnasium for a pep rally and then travel with their class outside to participate in group activities and games. Parent Council has generously provided a small snack for all students to enjoy during their outdoor time. Please pack an additional snack for your child to eat prior to heading outside for the day.  

Here are some things to keep in mind: 

·         Wear athletic clothing and shoes 

·         Pack a water bottle and snack (we will have two snacks this day) 

·         Please apply sunscreen and bug spray before arriving to school 

·         We will be moving forward with Sports Day unless there are thunderstorms, please dress accordingly 

We are seeking volunteers for our LBS 2023 Sports Day. We are looking for parents who would be comfortable co-leading (with support from a teacher) a sports day activity. This year, sports day is happening on Friday, June 16th, 2023 from 9:00am – 11:50am. If you’re available to join us please email your child’s teacher or email Lindsay Brown at librown@cbe.ab.ca. Please note that a valid police clearance is required to volunteer.

Friday, June 2

Hi parents,

It's been a good week. I'm happy to back in the classroom 😁

This week, we've been doing a lot of work around Light and Shadows. The students have:

• Learned how light travels 
• Talked about 'the speed of light'
• Learned about prisms
• Learned how some surfaces cause light to bend
• Learned about reflection
• Learned about shadows
• Measured their own shadows at different times of day
• Learned the terms Transparent, Translucent, and Opaque
• Learned about 'light safety'
• Had a lot of fun experimenting with flashlights, mirrors, and light-bending materials

We've been consistently reading Ticket To Curlew, and we are on track to finish the book early next week!

Math

In math, our focus has been on decimals. We did a pretty sizeable 'math assessment' earlier in the week, in which the students solved complex addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division word problems. These problems were no joke. They each involved big, 'unfriendly' numbers, and had some tricky wording as well. I was so happy to see that many students were able to solve them completely independently, and when I did have to offer support, it was always pretty minor. I am incredibly proud of how well this class has risen to the many challenges posed by a new math curriculum. They've learned concepts that I didn't understand until I was in grade 6. 

Writing

We've been doing a lot of simple writing tasks connected to light and shadows. But today the students really amazed me with their Free Verse poetry. This was our first time doing 'free verse' poetry, and since it is the style of poem that has no rules, I was expecting a lot of students to just write a few simple sentences and call it a day. I was wrong! The free verse poems they came up with (usually about 'shadows') were so good that we had to have an impromptu poetry read-aloud. 

Spelling

It was another exceptional week for spelling. Keep up the good work everyone!

French Party - June 8

Thanks to the students' efforts with completing blog homework, we have earned our French party. I sent an email about the French foods students will have the option to try. It should be 'un jour tres amusant'.
